Changed his name around while living in Memphis and began to use an "S" at the end of his surname. But his military records show him still using his legal name and spelling while serving in the Army during World War 2.
Served at the battle of Anzio in Italy after being in the North African
campaign. He was a cook and thrown onto the front lines to help with the artillery when most of the artillerymen were killed by snipers. He saw a man next to him get his head literally blown off then he was shot in the leg. He received a Purple Heart.
After the war he was sent to a nursing home for veterans near Chicago due to his trauma of the event. It is said that he spent the net several years in the facility drinking and smoking while staring at himself in a mirror.
He died there of a heart attack and is buried at the Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois.
