"Big Al", as he liked to be called, was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents added the "S" to his surname so as to sound more Anglo-American as they distanced themselves from their French Creole line at the time because people would ask if they were part black, which of course they were.
When he was one they moved for a couple of years to Texas then
"Big Al" and "Wendy"
a year before I was born

back to where they originated from in Louisiana. He grew up bouncing back and forth between New Orleans and Lacombe.
He was illiterate, never going to school, and formed a gang. Was a captain of it and worked for the New Orleans mob. Served time in the Angola Prison for his mob services. When he got out he did a hit for the mob then eventually fled to Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Had also worked on the oil rigs for the Merchant Marines in the gulf as a cook. Also tried to join the Air Force during the Korean War but got kicked out of basic training when they found out he couldn't read.
Spent his life as a laborer in construction after moving to Indiana.
In 1978 he moved south of Bluffton to a farm house and raised collies, chickens, cats, turkeys, ducks a pony and a goat.
Spent the school year of 81-82 near North Platte, Nebraska as house parents on a ranch for kids 8-14 in in trouble with the Law. There he found out the foreman, that went by "Butch",  was abusing the boys. He confronted Butch about it and beat Butch with Butch's own belt while standing on his neck. Butch had said to him at the start "you don't know who you're messing with. I gotta a black belt in karate." Then it started.
When "Big Al" finished beating Butch with Butch's belt he tossed the belt on him, spit on him then leaned over and said "You don't know who you're messing with. The New Orleans mob".
He used his mob skills to save some kids one time, so I guess he wasn't all bad.
He moved to Miamisburg, Ohio (near Dayton) in the early 2000's where several of his children lived at the time.
He died at a nursing home of Dementia after a mild heart attack.
BTW, he never voted saying ALL the politicians are corrupt although he did say Eisenhower was a good President.
